Young Entrepreneur Showcase with ZNG IMPRESA: Strategies to Survive a Cut-Throat Industry

The Start-Up Entrepreneur Series in collaboration with Entrepreneurs.my and This Week In Asia, aims to inspire a new breed of Generation-Y entrepreneurs, showcasing success stories of entrepreneurs in the region who have succeeded despite their young age. We interview Fashionpreneur, Social Media Strategist and Entrepreneur, Jon W on his start as a fashion entrepreneur and his transition of being a social media strategist to becoming the next big name in online fashion.

 Getting to know about The Strategies to Be The No.1 Start-Up

  • Marketing is King! How did you publicize your business? How did you get people to notice you and not your competitors?

Being a digital marketer, it gives me the edge to know the in’s & outs of online marketing and how to use different channels to direct traffic, garner database and generate sales revenue.

Having said, branding is also the key factor to getting noticed. I wanted to position the brand on the luxury pedestal while maintaining great price accessibility without tolerating comfort. I am also a firm believer of guerilla marketing, basically viral & controversial campaigns.

At the early stage of the business, I used the littlest marketing budget I had to do minimal online advertisements and ran a contest to give away one year supply of shoes for free. Just by activating these strategies, I’ve gotten the attention of the local competitors. I would like to think that they are threatened by Z’NG’s presence and it pushes me to strive harder.

 

  • They say, Talents is what make or break the business. For yourself, how did you get your talents and what did you do to make them remain working for you?

Currently I am running the entire business on my own but what I do know about getting talents to remain working for me is to treat them like my own family. Back in previous companies, I treated my team mates like my younger brothers and sisters. It may not be the most professional thing to do but I cared for them beyond their work performances.

I had private chats with them to understand what they are going through in their personal lives and basically created an environment where they feel belonged without having them lose respect for me as their superior.

 

  • If you could name 3 Main Criteria that have made You and Your Business successful, what are those 3 Main Criteria?

In business, Relationship is also King. Maintaining good friendships with people of influence has brought me extra publicity regardless of how minute they are. I have to be constantly aware who the key players are in fashion & pop culture industry. I am trying to make friends and befriend everybody with no hidden agenda.

Secondly, I am extremely open to new ideas. I am constantly reading articles or journals published by Business Times, The Wall Street Journal, Times, and different books to keep me updated on the happenings in the retail & digital media industry. Since I didn’t learn any of the above from school, I will have to humbly pick up this knowledge along the way.  Donald Trump is one of my favourite authors.

Lastly, I try to be as meticulous as I can with the finance side. Every collected receipt, every transaction, every cent spent for the good of the business are all tracked & recorded. This is the only way how I could check on the progress of getting back my initial investment.

 

  • Businesses need to Innovate in order to stay Competitive in the marketplace – How have you innovated your company to be competitive until today?

ZNG IMPRESA operates on three guiding pillars – Service, Product and Experience. Z’NG has not officially launched yet, but if there’s anything I need to innovate to stay competitive would be to create an extra edge for customer experience. In retail industry, clients would return if you can provide them an experience they can never get from anywhere else. Look at Starbucks – everybody has bought into the idea of drinking expensive coffee.

Magazine.
