  • Why did you get started on this path towards building your own business?

I always disagree to the notion that every fresh graduate have to follow the conventional path to work for a company, and gradually climbing the corporate ladder.

Although I acknowledge there is valid points at employement but personally, I would rather work my hardest to build my own dream right from the beginning rather than working hard to build dreams of others.

  • Was there any inspiration or anyone who inspired you to pursue your dream to become an entrepreneur today?

Our company’s angel investor – Sean Teoh is definitely the immediate inspiration to me as we work very closely together. He is incredibly successful with his F&B businesses and various investments. I genuinely think people like Sean will be the kind of individuals that would make Malaysia a serious global player.

  • In your experience, what are the 3 Winning Traits that Entrepreneurs should possess when they start their business?

a) Proactiveness b) Persevarence c) Humilty

(a)    Getting to know about The Start-Up

  • Tell us more about Your Company – What have you built? What is your product or service to your customers? What is your track-record so far?

Mailbird is my company. It is the smartest, fastest and most secure email platform for Windows that brings productivity back into your life. We have roughly 7,000 active users and growing. We are a team of 8 incredibly smart and talented people who believe in this mission to build the greatest email productivity platform ever, with a vision to help people become better at information management. We are excited to report that users are already opting to upgrade their software to the yearly paid subscription because they love it so much already, and we are just getting started.

  • Why did you decide to go into this business? Is it because it is a lucrative market? Is it a Blue Ocean which your talents and expertise through your business can provide?

The market for a proper and modern-age email solution for the Windows platform is very much under-served. Windows still holds the highest majority of the OS market share, email remains the #1 online activity to date, and between consumer and business email accounts they are growing 6% year over year in terms of billions of email accounts. There just is nothing that has adapted to the highly distracting environment for those who work online. Email has become the number 1 stressor and distraction for many people and businesses, and we are already fixing that problem.

Mailbird to Let Businesses Manage Emails more Effectively
Mailbird to Let Businesses Manage Emails more Effectively
  • Please share with us, when you established your organization during its early days – How did you fund it? Any tips on raising the funds? Any tips on convincing investors?

The initial capital of $100k usd was injected by our CFO and original Mailbird founders and has given us the ability to bootstrap the business, while keeping operational costs down and focusing on product and business development in Bali. We are just recently actively seeking outside investment to give our resource pool a boost for marketing for growth and strategic partnerships that will scale our business.

I don’t think anyone can say there is any one way or tip to convincing investors, you have to just get out there and start talking to as many of them as possible. Make your business case, be able to sell your vision really really well with a track record that proves a future of success and growth for your business. We’ve got all the right recipe in place for this already: A solid team, a really great story, a lucrative product, awesome business development milestones built around growth, including an exit strategy. The final piece is down to finding the right investor that would fit as a great partner with the mutual benefit of seeing that Mailbird succeeds as a global email solution.

  • Where do you see your business growing into, for the next 5 to 10 years?

We are first going to build a solid email client, that will in a year serve as a platform allowing 3rd party developers and strategic partners to build productivity focused email apps that integrate with Mailbird. We are focused currently on the consumer market, but by 2015 we are looking to expand to the business market by a really great offering to SME’s, small teams and startups alike. In part of this effort we seek to close a series A investment round to allocate more resource for growth and pursuing high security measures when it comes to email, a big problem we face today. Our current focus is to build a solid desktop email application first, to focus on productivity from the desktop…this is where it happens. However in the future, we seek to expand to the mobile platform given the high demand for Mailbird on iOS, Android and even Windows phones.

Mailbird to Make Managing Emails Simple
Mailbird to Make Managing Emails Simple

Here we seek strategic partnerships with ISP’s, security and email message encryption partners, hardware distribution with Mailbird as a software offering on that hardware with Intel’s latest product line and of course a plan to work more closely with Microsoft in their recent expansion to offering IMAP support for Outlook.com, touch technology with their 2 in 1 machines and of course their Windows phone market expansion efforts.

Our immediate and prolonged goal is to build our user base while gathering data on email usage, to solve the unstable environment with email seen today. Mailbird is a global product, and we hope to see more users from around the world using it especially since our recent move to localize the software.

  • What is your vision for the industry that you are in? Do you see a trend coming up that your business can capitalize?

Our vision is to bring productivity back to people and businesses on a beautiful, incredibly fast and highly secure email platform for the huge worldwide Windows market. As more and more people are working online, email is an inevitable tool that you will use to communicate with friends, colleagues, potential clients and potential business partners.

A major focus today is on productivity, how to stay productive? As well as what tools will be available to help you grow your business? PC World named Mailbird the best free email client for the productive business person in 2013, in 2014 IT World named Mailbird the best email client for Windows.

Tech Crunch and Lifehacker called us the “Sparrow for Windows”, so we knew we tapped into unchartered waters in pursuit of productivity and online communication for Windows users. We hear that everything is going mobile, but when we look at email these projections can be deceiving. It is true that more people open emails on the mobile devices, however when it comes to getting things done with those emails and replying, the desktop and the native in control feel of a client is the answer.

The Start-Up Entrepreneur Series: HealthWorks inspire you to be a healthier and happier you! Part 2!

Rue-Hann Lim, the Co-Founder of www.healthworks.my. She is on a mission to inspire fellow Malaysians to make better choices for their health and wellness.

Health Works

Getting to know about The Start-Up

1. Tell us more about Your Company – What have you built? What is your product or service to your customers? What is your track-record so far?
HealthWorks.my is Malaysia’s online health hub. Our mission is to build the largest health community in Malaysia and inspire Malaysians to make better choices for their health, fitness & happiness. It will serve as Malaysia’s one-stop-health-hub for education, shopping and community.
Driven by the purpose of providing localised health information and making healthy living easier for people, our approach is multi-fold:
1) Education through expert advice and interesting localised health content
2) eCommerce with health-related products & services
3) a thriving community of health enthusiasts.
Ending our first month, we’re quite amazed that during the first 10 days after the launch of our website, we had over 10,000 unique visitors. This shows that Malaysians are indeed interested to know more about health.

healthworks

2. Why did you decide to go into this business? Is it because it is a lucrative market? Is it a Blue Ocean which your talents and expertise through your business can provide?
We couldn’t find a user friendly interesting health site that serves multiple purposes in Malaysia. For urban young people like us especially – we tend to neglect the importance of health when we’re busy with work and social life (not forgetting lying on our bed scrolling on social media networks). We’re busy people who want to know “what to do now”, “how to do it”, “where to get it”. On the other hand, we have great local healthcare professionals that are yearning to reach out to people too.
With this gap not being filled, I see a need to provide an online one-stop health hub for younger Malaysians where they can find practical, enjoyable health information, purchase health-related products/services and get into action, and find suitable community to embrace this active healthy living lifestyle together! It’s that one place which empowers you to take action and live healthy.

rue - healthworks
(right) Rue, (left) Jolene, the content strategist of healthworks.my

4. Where do you see your business growing into, for the next 5 to 10 years?
There are many opportunities in the area of Health. In the short term I see HealthWorks.my to become the first place Malaysians go whenever they want to find health information, buy health-related products, or connect to other health communities or services.
In the longer term, I am looking forward to work with hospitals, clinics, beauty parlors, gyms, health insurance companies and various healthcare providers to streamline a person’s healthcare experience in Malaysia. It will be awesome if one day we can build a Health Village in Malaysia!

5. What is your vision for the industry that you are in? Do you see a trend coming up that your business can capitalize?
There are two trends on the rise in Malaysia. One is the trend of going mobile (even baby boomers are on mobiles now!) Second is the increased consumer awareness for preventive healthcare which leads to the rise of self-directed consumers. Gone are the days where consumers wait for the doctor to give them answers. Now, we have more people using the internet to get health information to help them make a decision throughout their health journey. They consult the internet before and after visiting a healthcare professional. What they got from the internet, helps facilitate their discussion with healthcare professionals. I see an opportunity for us here in Malaysia to tap on technology and help the community to get what they are looking for. In simpler words, facilitate their journey of living a healthy active lifestyle.

1. Tell us more about yourself – Who are you, what do you do, what are your qualifications (If any) and what have made you into the successful entrepreneur that you are today?

My name is Wylie Wee and I am the Co-Founder of Player Holdings Pte Ltd, a company that uses sports as a universal playing field to create value to individuals and society. Our company operates through 3 core businesses in the areas of Sports Events Planning and Management, Sports Merchandising, and Sports Leadership Training.

I am a SIM Global Education Scholar in Academic Excellence and Leadership and I graduated from Singapore Institute of Management with the highest honor of Degree with Distinction in Bachelor of Business Management. Apart from academic studies, I am also a Professional Netball Coach and an accredited Certified Motivational Coach with the Institute of Motivational Coaching.

I own a growing startup business, but I am still just a hustler who is working late into the nights and over the precious weekends to get more things into place, so I wouldn’t really call myself a “successful” entrepreneur. As for what made me who I am today, it has got to be one word – Courage.

2. Why did you casino pa natet get started on this path towards building your own business?

Sports has always been my passion, my direction, and sometimes even my escape. Entrepreneurship is a dream career that I want to see myself venture into. So I thought to myself, since Sports has given me so much, why not use Sports to make a difference in people’s life. Nothing beats pursuing a dream with something you are truly passionate about and can do best in. And this was how my entrepreneurship journey started.

Player Holding3. Was there any inspiration or anyone who inspired you to pursue your dream to become an entrepreneur today?

My Mum has always been my source of inspiration and motivation since young. She was the first person who taught me the meaning of being accountable and responsible for all of our life choices. As a young kindergarten kid fascinated by the novel thought of standing on stage to take part in a story-telling competition, I raised my little hands with excitement to express interest in taking part. When the tiring (and boring) practice routines set in, I was turned off by the fact that I need to sacrifice my playtime for practice. It was that point of time, my Mum lectured me harshly when I told her I did not want to take part anymore, she told me this, “To be a part of this competition was your choice from the beginning, no one forced you to make this choice. For every choice you make, give nothing less than your best. And that is how things should be done.”

I did not truly understand what that meant at that point of time, but now it all makes sense. Entrepreneurship is my choice and during those moments I felt like giving up, I would remind myself of what my Mum taught me.

4. In your experience, what are the 3 Winning Traits that Entrepreneurs should possess when they start their business?

7 Secrets of Jack Ma Entrepreneurship Lesson Part 2

Continue of 7 Secrets of Jack Ma Entrepreneurship Lesson Part 1

This is a talk by Jack Ma, the former Chairman and CEO of Alibaba Group. Jack Ma shared his experience to the aspiring entrepreneurs who are joining “Win In China” competition, a reality show for aspiring entrepreneurs to win 10 million RMB for their business startup. In the 1st season, 3000 participants were selected to join the interview session and 108 participants will be selected to join the competition officially.

Jack Ma – Win In China – Part 2

Jack Ma

4. Elephant Can’t Kill Ant
Jack Ma’s China Yellowpages business was competing with China Telecom. It was a very tough competition. His capital was 50,000 RMB and China Telecom’s capital was 240 million RMB.

“I think our competition with China Telecom was quite successful. Through the experience, I still believe that we shouldn’t afraid of giant company. Elephant won’t kill ant easily. You just need to hide smartly and having a good strategy. You will survive. After 8 months competition, China Telecom was unable to beat us while we also didn’t know how to beat them. After that, we had a joint venture.”

There were an interesting incident happened after the joint venture. It was actually a disaster. China Telecom invested 1.4million RMB in this deal and they have more members on board. During the board meeting, Jack’s suggestions were turned down by the board members.
“From my perspective, I can do so much with 1.4million RMB from China Telecom. However, from their perspective, they spent only 1.4million RMB to destroy Jack Ma’s venture. I got the fund, but I lost the most valuable thing, the venture that I execute well in the beginning.”, He mentioned.

jack ma5. Be The Role Model of Employee
Jack Ma founded his third company, Cofortune Information Technology. This is a successful company, making profit of 2.9 million RMB in 14 months. However, there was perception different among the leaders. Jack Ma’s believed that internet-based is the future of Ecommerce. However the other leader believed in EDI (Electronic Data Interchange).

“When your belief is different with the leader, remember, the leader is always right. If you cannot change him, you change yourself. Therefore, I decided to follow my belief and start over again. Although the company made 2.9 million RMB profit, I didn’t take any cent when I left.”

“I brought 6 people from Hangzhou to build Cofortune. The team has grown to 50 to 60 people. When I left, I didn’t get anyone to follow me. Remember, this is the rule of the game. When you decided the left the company that you have started, and you get the people in the company to follow you, one day later, your employee will do the same.”

“When I left Beijing to start over again, I met with the 6 people who followed me to Beijing in the beginning. I told them, if you are willing to follow me going back to our home (Hangzhou) to start a business again, I’ll give everyone only 500 RMB and everyone must rent a house nearby because I don’t have much fund for your transportation. We will work non-stop for 10 months. If we fail, we just look for a new job.”

Jack Ma offer 3 days to the team to think about the offer, but they came back after 3 minutes. They told Jack, “let’s go home, let’s start over again!”. Alibaba was started then, followed by Taobao.com and Alipay.

jack ma6. You Are The Parents and VC Is the Uncle of Your Business
Alibaba received investment from Son Masayoshi, who is also the 2nd richest man in Japan. Jack Ma mentioned that when dealing with Venture Capitalists, always show the respect in the eye.

“Both sides are equal, when VC asking you 100 questions, you should ask at least 99 questions too.”

“You must understand the belief of the VC when he/she investing and he / she investing in us. We should talk about the worst situation and understand each other’s role in this situation. However, many entrepreneurs only like to talk about how successful they can be.”

“Both side should write down the promise to each other. This is mutual, like a marriage agreement.”

“The communication with VC is very important. Don’t feel that VC is the grandfather. VC is always the uncle and you are the parents of your business. You know how to grow your child (business), and the uncle can offer you advice and money to buy powdered milk and clothes. The responsibility to grow the child is always in your hand. So, VC’s fund is to grow your business. It is not to save your business.”

“When should you raise fund from VC? Remember, it is not when you are poor, always raise fund when your company is having the best performance. One shouldn’t repair the rooftop during the raining day, but it should be done during sunshine day. Same goes to the company transformation, always do it when your company has the best circumstances”

jack-ma7. Hire Smart People Instead of The Master
“We should find the suitable people to join our team.” Jack Ma don’t like to invite popular business people to join the board of director because these big man seldom spending their time in your small company.

“I hired a vice president for first time. We had only USD$5million budget and the Vice President request for at least USD$1.5million. It was because the Vice President had the annual budget with at least USD$40million previously. When he came to our company, the amount was too little for him, but I felt that the amount can do so much advertising activities.”

“Different people have different perspective. Find the right people according to your level and needs. Always remember small company shouldn’t hire the master.”

“When your company is small like a tractor, and you hire the master who has Boeing 747’s engine, your tractor (company) will break when the engine start. Therefore, please do not ask for gorgeous (popular) one when getting people to join your team. Small company should hire smart people with the right mentality.”, He said

Besides these key points, of course, there are more that we can learn from this sharing. For example:
“What an entrepreneur wants is the experience of building the business. In our life, we seldom regret with the things that we have done, but we will regret with this things with haven’t done when we are old. From the first day starting the business, we should already know it is not an easy way, but the experience will be the most valuable asset in life.”

“The best negotiator is always the best listener.”

“One must have a big heart to compete with the competitor in business. Competition is fun. If you feel struggle when competing with the other companies, there must be something wrong with your strategy. Although we have competed with many companies such as eBay, but in my heart, I never see them as my competitors.”

“The most valuable thing between you (entrepreneur) and employee is trust. You must trust them and I never hide any good and bad things from the employees.”

“I have seen some employer who did not know how to criticize the employee. When meeting with employee, the employer praised the employee before criticizing. In the end, the employee didn’t know what is wrong and remains the same. In this situation, we should act fast when we have the decision in mind. This is also our responsibility to the employee.”
