Top 24 Entrepreneurial Lessons that Joel Neoh, the Award Winning Entrepreneur have Learned in 2014!

Joel Neoh, the Award Winning Entrepreneur & the GROUPON Head of Asia Pacific wrote a note on his reflected Lessons! “Top 24 Entrepreneurial Lessons that he has learned in 2014”!

#1: It’s not important where you come from, but where you’re going.

#2: Not who you are, but what you do that defines you.

#3: People will always say “you can’t”. You just smile and say “watch me”.

#4: People that Joel Neoh most enjoy working with: dream big + get shit done + know how to have fun.

#5: Instead of limiting our challenges, challenge our limits.

Amy Cuddy, who was listed #1 in Time Magazine’s list of “Game Changers”, …innovators and problem-solvers that are inspiring change in America”

#6: The most dangerous poison against further success is the prolonged feeling of achievement. The antidote is to reflect and think, every night, what can be done better tomorrow.

#7: Simplified summary on investing. There are only 4 things that really count when making an investment: 1) A business you understand 2) Favorable long term economics 3) Able and trustworthy management 4) Sensible valuation That’s investment, everything else is speculation.

#8: Be a genius. Talent hits a target no one else can hit, genius hits a target no one else can see.

#9: 10 habits of the most successful people in the world: Set goals, focus, value time, spend less, work hard, continue learning, group with like-minded, persistent, calculated risk, generosity.

#10: Success is achieved from striving for perfection. Happiness is achieved from embracing the imperfections.

#11: Do the hardest things first. Eat a live frog first thing in the morning and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day.

#12: When writing the story of your life, don’t let anyone else hold the pen.

#13: We may not achieve everything we dream, but we will not achieve anything unless we dream.

#14: No one looks back on their life and remember the nights they got plenty of sleep. #‎workhard #‎partyhard

#15: Success comes from having the heart to dream big and the fortitude to see it through.

#16: Two kinds of company cultures in this world: cultures where what you do matters, and cultures where all that matters is who you are. Accept only the former, the latter sucks.

#17: WHAT is right is always more important than WHO is right. Outcome not ego.

#18: It’s not where you take things from – it’s where you take them to. Nothing is original. Steal from anywhere that resonates with inspiration or fuels your imagination. Select only things to steal that speak directly to your soul. If you do this, your work (and theft) will be authentic. Authenticity is invaluable; originality is non-existent.

#19: Management is doing things right, while Leadership is doing the right things. Doing the right things is more important than doing things right.

#20: Ambition fires up the strong and threatens the weak. We need to be more ambitious.

#21: Two types of people at work: 1) Can do. 2) Can’t do. Unless your profession needs you to be (2), no reason why you shouldn’t be (1).

#22: Rule #1: Have the courage to dream, and the guts to do it. Rule #2: If all else fails go back to Rule #1.

#23: The most valuable commodity in the world is information; the most valuable tool in the world is communication; the most valuable mental trait in the world is positivity.

#24: Focus on your customers. Serve your employees. Learn from your competitors.

Getting to know about The Wisdom behind The Start-Up

  • What would be your 3 main advices that you would offer to entrepreneurs who want to start up today?

a) The journey of entrepreneurship is always harder than the initial expectations. Be clear of the “why” you want to start a business. Don’t do it just for the money or the glory. Because chances are you will fail. Sometimes, it’s better to start a business two years later in which you can spend the first two years cultivating the skills, industry awareness, and ultimately the mental strength you need to succeed in this space.

b) I love this particular quote by Mark Cuban “Work like there is someone working 24 hours to take it away from you” This implies beside working hard, you have to develop the inner games that works for you to continuously frame and motivate yourself to stay focus on your goals.

c) Lastly, I would say get support from people who really understand the nature of entrepreneurship, especially the sacrifices you have to make build your business and products. It will be a lonely road and you will be away from your loved ones than before.

Getting to know about The Strategies behind the Startup’s Success

  • Marketing is King! How did you publicize your business? How did you get people to notice you and not your competitors?

So far, we perform very minimal marketing activities as we have been putting our resources into the research & development side of our projects. Any current traction we have is mostly came from organic growth. However pretty soon we will be going to be more aggressive at marketing esepcially through digital campaigns, influencers marketing, roadshows, and strategic partnerships.

  • They say, Talents is what make or break the business. For yourself, how did you get your talents and what did you do to make them remain working for you?

In Dino Media, the main Group behind MYHERO is full of talents because we attracted them with our crazy ambition and that’s excitement to them. Because, sometimes we forget that other than money, there are others incentives in play for people to join your mission, to name a few – purpose, growth, autonomy and ultimately more freedom to express their skills and talents. As the pioneers, we have to keep motivating & empowering the team continuously to stay align for our vision to be reached.

  • If you could name 3 Main Criteria that have made You and Your Business successful, what are those 3 Main Criteria?

a) Ambition b) Iterative  c) Grit

  • Businesses need to Innovate in order to stay Competitive in the marketplace – How have you innovated your company to be competitive until today?

We have this burning belief that we are capable to disrupt any industry for the better. We are doing that by:

  • Pushing past conventional wisdom by thinking outside the box and sometimes without the box
  • Understanding innovation has to be done iteratively for the long run.

Getting to know about The Strategies behind the Success of the Startup

  • Marketing is King! How did you publicize your business? How did you get people to notice you and not your competitors?

We focus on building genuine relationships with our audience. We started out actively engaging our audience on Facebook. We make sure we build a great community of people who enjoy consuming entertainment, lifestyle, and viral content. That is probably why till date, we have quite a loyal following despite being very new in the digital publishing space.

  • They say, Talents is what make or break the business. For yourself, how did you get your talents and what did you do to make them remain working for you?

Specifically for Coffeeticks & Tantannews, we practise a very lean approach. Most of our writers are freelance writers which we recruited them through referrals and social media. Our team is not big so everyone is like family. The management team always keep the content team accoountable with the daily performance of the sites and motivate them to reach the ultimate vision. We want to make a difference and that is exciting for our team.

  • If you could name 3 Main Criteria that have made You and Your Business successful, what are those 3 Main Criteria?

a) Lean

b) Rapid Problem Solving

c) Innovative

  • Businesses need to Innovate in order to stay Competitive in the marketplace – How have you innovated your company to be competitive until today?

We are constantly innovating our publishing sites. We rely heavily on measurable data. We track how visitors landed on our site, which speicific time has the most traffic, and so on. For example, we also measure how certain web elements on the site drive more clicks. We have also great emphasis on good user experience and pleasant user interface design.

  • Global economic uncertainties Kill Businesses – In your mind, how did you weather this challenge for your business?

That’s part of the every entrepreneurial pursuit we would say. For us mindset is important, we prefer to see the glass half-full rather than half-empty when it comes to uncertainties because in the process of finding more clarity, we could potentially discover strategies and tactics that no one has ever thought of. We would call that innovation.

  • Tell us more about Your Company – What have you built? What is your product or service to your customers? What is your track-record so far?

We are iteratively building multiple digital assets in the digital space but the ones that we are really pushing hard are our English news portal – Coffeeticks and Chinese news portal -Tantannews. Tantannews has been around for only 6 months but we are averaging about 900k visits per month. Coffeeticks, which we launched just a month ago, has hit 630k for its first month. Both of these sites publish content about lifestyle, entertainment, and humor.

We also curate and publish viral news and all things trendy in the social web. Additionally, we also own multiple facebook pages which we have a team to engage great content with our communities.

  • Why did you decide to go into this business? Is it because it is a lucrative market? Is it a Blue Ocean which your talents and expertise through your business can provide?

We decided to go into the digital publishing business because we realized it will get even more expensive to rely on third-party distribution channels. We thought,  for the long run, it makes more sense for us to build our own distribution channels which can give us so many leverage to get brands on board to advetise as well as to launch our own projects

  • Where do you see your business growing into, for the next 5 to 10 years?

As a team, we asipire to become the leading global player in digital publishing within the next 5-10 years. That would mean a lot for our company as well as for Malaysia, as this would be the epitome of our nation’s catchphrase “Malaysia Boleh” which means Malaysia can!

Fortunately for us, despite of our young entry in this industry, we are already in the global market. Our news portals have each been visited by audience from at least 180 countries, mainly – Singapore, Indonesia, United States, Canada, China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Phillipines.

  • What is your vision for the industry that you are in? Do you see a trend coming up that your business can capitalize?

As more content are screaming for attention on the Internet, we forsee there’s a need for quality storytelling production. Because content needs to stand out to capture people’s attention among the sea of content. This will be one of key areas we will be working on to prepare for this trend.

MYHERO is a gamified social network specifically designed for people to report & consume purposeful and relevant information according to their physical location.

We are currently championing one major use of MYHERO, which is to share crime & safety information so users of MYHERO are able to preempt or avoid unsafe situations. We also complement that core function with personal safety features like SOS button to call for help from nearby users or to your designated emergency contacts whenever you are in trouble.

This is only the beginning, as we have plans to pivot to other markets whenever necessary, but we are now focusing on building an app that is intelligent enough to provide you information you really care about at the right time & and the right moment. The sky is the limit.

  • Why did you decide to go into this business? Is it because it is a lucrative market? Is it a Blue Ocean which your talents and expertise through your business can provide?

We go into this business in MYHERO because it’s eventual that everyone needs to consume purposeful and relevant information like for example – crime & safety information whenever you travel to a new place.

We really want to build a socially responsible product on top of just making money.

There are plenty of personal safety apps around but we like to position ourselves to compete in the blue ocean but we attentive to the red ocean so that we are able to differentiate ourselves from our closest competitors.

  • Please share with us, when you established your organization during its early days – How did you fund it? Any tips on raising the funds? Any tips on convincing investors?

I can only share through personal experience. For me, I raised fund for my venture by repeatedly pitching our investor, arranging meetups, keep on reminding him to consider my proposal, etc.

It was tough & energy consuming but I had no formula, I think for my case it’s really about being vulnerable of my true characters to my investor and fortunately that earns his trust and confidence.

  • Where do you see your business growing into, for the next 5 to 10 years?

We definitely want to be the leading app globally. Why think small when you can think big. Fortunately, our team share the same aspiration and with some smart business maneuvers; I’m confident we can achieve our goals.

  • What is your vision for the industry that you are in? Do you see a trend coming up that your business can capitalize?

I think there is going to be a need of utility social networks. We have plenty of recreation social networks today like Facebook and Twitter but as a company we want to be that group of people that would fulfil that need. Utility social network is definitely more useful at times of challenges and troubles. It is still a bold prediction but we believe users don’t always know what they want.

3 Business Wisdoms shared by Email Management Startup Mailbird on Success

Mailbird is a creative email platform that brings productivity back into your life on the most widely used operating system today, Windows. Email today has become very insecure, a major stress in the workplace and slow with the innovative process that adjusts to how we work and communicate online today. NextUpAsia.com chats with the CEO and Co-Founder, Andrea Loubier about how she started this revolutionary business online.

Changing the Way We Use Emails by Mailbird
Changing the Way We Use Emails by Mailbird

(a)    Getting to know about The Wisdom behind The Start-Up

  • What would be your 3 main advice that you would offer to entrepreneurs who want to start up today?

1)      Find something you are truly excited about, a business idea that provides a solution to you and at least thousands around the world.

2) Define how you are going to be better, stronger different than others in your vertical – measure yourself up against the competition with a plan to be on top.

3) Don’t be afraid to tell people about your idea, because before you exert the time and effort into it (because it takes a hell of a lot of time and resources to do it) get the feedback, welcome the challenges that people propose about your business idea and use that to your advantage and go for it.

  • If you have a wishlist, what would you want Governments or the Private Sectors to do, to assist businesses like yours? Just any wish and why?

Government grants allocated to tech communication and productivity businesses. I’d want a global effort to make online communication truly secure, available for the world (I love Google’s Project Loon for example). Having a strong collaborative network in offering productivity through our email platform to large student groups, small to large businesses, partnerships with local ISP’s.

Why?

Because I believe in our strong vision to be the de facto world-wide best email client for Windows that delivers speed, productivity, an awesome user experience and a highly secure means for both personal and business communication.

Working on a startup is the biggest roller coaster ride you’ll ever experience, there are a ton of uncertainties and challenges. It is probably one of the hardest things to do, but if you love building something from nothing then you will embrace those moments of struggle and actually find it very rewarding and fun. I think more people should pursue entrepreneurship.
