Surviving the Slowdown in Property Business Globally through Clever Marketing Tactics – Part 3

The Start-Up Entrepreneur Series in collaboration with Entrepreneurs.my and This Week In Asia, aims to inspire a new breed of Generation-Y entrepreneurs, showcasing success stories of entrepreneurs in the region who have succeeded despite their young age. We take a look at, Boxyroom, a startup based in Singapore who is ‘Matchmaking Tenants with Overseas Property Rentals.’ Marketing is King! How did you publicize your business? How did you get people to notice you and not your competitors?

It has to start with a great product. Once the product is proven, I will share the good news with influential media and blogs so that they can help me to tell the world about it. It is also important to keep up with current affairs and see how Boxyroom can help the world to relieve pain points and be socially responsible.

Keeping the media engaged and sharing good news to the world is a great way to bring benefits to both the community and Boxyroom. Online marketing using search ads in text and graphic will be the most important way of paid publicity.

They say, Talents is what make or break the business. For yourself, how did you get your talents and what did you do to make them remain working for you?

To me, talent comes with the person, cannot be acquired and must be discovered. However one can develop and maximize his talents through external stimulants. To me I have an ability to observe and sense the surroundings for opportunities to solve a problem for people for a fee. There is still so much for me to learn in various aspects of business and the industry. So I will invest time and money for continuous education and keep myself up to date with the latest trends and skills.

If you could name 3 Main Criteria that have made You and Your Business successful, what are those 3 Main Criteria?

  • Persistence
  • Excellent money management
  • Celebrate life and enjoy what I do in businessBusinesses need to Innovate in order to stay Competitive in the marketplace – How have you innovated your company to be competitive until today?

Innovation doesn’t need to be cutting-edge technology or new business models. To be competitive in the market, we just need to give customers what they want, and a little more to wow them.

Listen to your users and customers carefully, and make changes to meet their needs. There is no such thing as a bad feedback. Even if only one person makes a certain feedback, there may be many others who have the same thought but remains quiet. So never underestimate the power of every feedback.

Global economic uncertainties Kill Businesses – In your mind, how did you weather this challenge for your business?

At this early stage in the business, my focus at the moment is to increase awareness of Boxyroom around the world. Although the global economic is pretty unsettling, the potential of Boxyroom is great as there continue to be movement of people from one country or city to another for work and study.

About The Start-Up Entrepreneur:

The Entrepreneur’ is a firm believer of keeping things simple and lives by the mantra that “life is simple until we complicate it”. Our lives have become so complicated that with time, we have gotten used to it. If we can eliminate unnecessary complexity and stress of our daily lives, the world will be a happier and healthier place to live in. He also believes in doing one thing exceptionally well, rather than doing many things reasonable well.

About The Start-Up:

Boxyroom is the matchmaker for overseas property rentals. It is a rental property marketplace where tenants and landlords communicate and transacts with one another, peer-to-peer. We help landlords and tenants to kick-start the rental process, just like a dating agency. Once the match is made, that is a landlord has accepted a suitable tenant who subsequently pays a one-month deposit, the parties are free to develop the ‘relationship’ further. The key feature of Boxyroom is that tenants can reserve their rental property safely by paying a deposit through Boxyroom, and not directly to the landlord. This mitigates risk of fake landlord running away with the deposit.
