While in the shower, Dr Emmet Brown came up with the idea for the Flaux Capacitor; which made time travel possible with the help of a DeLorean. TJ (also at the shower) on the other hand, came up with the idea of food mapping on the internet. He roped in two of his close friends, formed Alphapod and Wootfood was born. Theirs is a story of friendship and intense bootstrapping an app development start up.

Lean Startup – Fail Fast, Succeed FASTER.

Lean Startup Machine is an intensive three-day workshop which teaches entrepreneurs and innovators how to build products with huge market potential. It is a metrics-driven startup competition where teams learn to identify the key risks in their business model through hands-on mentorship and our framework of tools.

Event Schedule…

Friday you will show up, eat, meet mentors and network with fellow attendees. Those who come as individuals will pitch a problem they want to solve, the top problems will be crowdsourced and teams will be formed. At around 9pm you will start constructing your first experiment designed to test, empirically, your problem hypothesis and customer hypothesis. Teams will break for the night when they have a developed a provable hypothesis and have practiced their customer development skills with a mentor.

Saturday those assumptions will be tested with customers. Most of your assumptions will likely be WRONG, so you will iterate rapidly to validate a new set of assumptions. You will go through several Minimum Viable Products (MVPs), escalating from Exploration, to Pitch, to Concierge.

Finally, Sunday afternoon you will present your learnings to the other teams and to a judging panel. This is not just a learning exercise, you will actually be competing with other teams to win additional mentorship and support. You will leave the workshop with…

*The ability to run any idea through the Validation Board, and run experiments to test if your assumptions are actually valid.

*The ability to end ‘endless’ team “discussions” with actionable tests rather than debates.

*The ability to determine if your idea is a scale-able startup or a hobby.

Who’s this event for?

Any startup team that does not have Product/Market Fit, or any aspiring founder, innovator, or early startup employee that wants to learn Lean Startup methodologies from the ground up.

Executives, leaders and innovators in large, medium, and small businesses looking to innovate or create the next successful product or service. Those who are inexperienced or experienced in Lean along with creatives, salespersons, marketers and decision makers can all be coached in the methodologies Lean Startup. This is an intensive educational workshop where you will learn the tools to develop any new business concept – NOT a hackathon.

Got an idea of your own? Great. You’ll have 50 seconds to give your elevator pitch at the kickoff. After voting, if your idea gets selected you will be able to form a team and start working. We strongly encourage everyone who comes to LSM to start fresh with a brand new concept.

No co-founders? No problem. You’ll meet many talented and smart people and have the opportunity to hear their new startup ideas.

We strongly encourage everyone who comes to LSM to start with a brand new concept. In the past, we have found that it is too difficult for participants to join a team that already possesses domain knowledge around an existing project.

If you plan to work on an existing project*, bring at least one co-founder with you to the event. If you have existing co-founders and none of them attend, you’ll have to work on a new startup idea. But don’t worry, you’ll still learn valuable skills that you can apply to your own business.

*An existing project is defined as one that already has mockups, prototypes or code associated with it. If that’s the case, you cannot recruit others to join you.

Space is limited – Tickets are now on sale now and going FAST!

http://leansg.eventbrite.com

What’s he doing with $30 million? As Nick D’Aloisio says, “I can’t even buy a car because I don’t have a licence yet.” So he’s going to buy a new bag. Why? “Mine is broken; it’s old and the strap’s not working.”

Recently, Yahoo bought 17 year old Nick D’Aloisio’s iPhone app, Summly, for $30 million. When Yahoo was founded in 1994, Nick wasn’t even born yet.

3 STEPS ON HOW NICK D’ALOISIO GET TO $30 MILLION

Nick’s app has delivered over 90 million news summaries in the four short months since he launched it on his 17th birthday in November. But Nick isn’t even old enough to be a Director of his company, so his mum is the Director while he sits in as Company Secretary.

What has gotten Nick D’Aloisio to success so quickly in 15 months when so many of us are still struggling after 15 years? Here’s 3 steps his journey has in common with most super-success stories:

PROBLEM + PASSION = $300K SOLUTION

Nick’s Summly App was the solution to a real world problem that no one else was solving well. As Nick relates, “I was 15 years old and I was revising for some kind of history exam. The problem was I was trying to find information that was useful to me.”

Searching Google on his phone didn’t give him enough detail to know what was or wasn’t a useful link. So he put his own iPhone app together. The app quickly rose up the download ranks and Apple featured it in their store.

Then came a fateful email: “About a month later, the private fund of the Hong Kong billionaire Li Ka Shing cold emailed me and expressed an interest to invest, but they didn’t realize I was 15…It turned out that they actually liked my age because it demonstrated I was net-native, so I’d only grown up with the Internet. They flew to London about a month later and invested $300,000. That kick-started this whole journey.”

$300K FUNDING + EXPERTISE = $1.3M REPUTATION

Nick D’Aloisio used the money to bring in world experts to help relaunch the app. At 16 years old, he teamed up with the leaders in Natural Language Processing, Stanford Research Institute (Who create Apple’s SIRI – named after the company’s initials, SRI).

In between high school classes in London, Nick worked with SRI in the US by phone and text messages to build the new app. SRI’s solid reputation and Nick’s focus on approaching well known celebrities to help him attracted high profile investors Stephen Fry, Ashton Kutcher and Yoko Ono who invested $1.3 million. Nick made the most of his investors, with Stephen Fry starring in the launch video for Summly.

$1.3M REPUTATION + SINGLE-MINDED FOCUS = $30M STORY

With world class partners and world class investors, Nick D’Aloisio gave up full-time school at the end of 2011, with his parent’s blessing: ““I talked about it with them and my headmaster and we decided it was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and it would be silly not to run with it. Now, looking back, I can say it was a massive gamble. But it was a good gamble.”

From a standing start to $30 million, Nick has taken the age old 1-2-3 formula of solving a problem in a smart way, then using the resources he attracts to bring in the best talent, and leveraging that to attract the most influential partners.

What made him think he could just go and knock on the door of the best companies and most well known people in the world? As he says “I was naive. I didn’t know I couldn’t.”

Nick D’Aloisio is now reflecting on this week’s news: “Numbing is probably the best word to describe it. It’s a shock to be honest. The only thing I can take from this is that I’m genuinely kind of proud that I’ve been getting a lot of tweets where young people are commenting and saying, “This is really inspirational, I want to go and start my own thing.”

How many of these 3 steps in the 1-2-3 formula have you taken in your business? What can you do to upgrade your product, your talent or your partners?

Or maybe it’s time to be a kid again, be naive again, when you didn’t know you couldn’t. And start something entirely new.

A classic example of a Malaysian success story in the Asian context, would billionaire tycoon and philanthropist, Mr. Vincent Tan whose business empire – Berjaya Group, owns the master-franchising rights to brands like Starbucks, Borders (Bookstores), 7-Eleven chain of stores, Singer (Electrical-focused stores) and many others.

Mr. Vincent Tan, renowned as being one of Malaysia and Asia’s most celebrated business tycoon and entrepreneur has carefully crafted his business empire to focus its strategies on bringing successful brands from overseas into the Asian markets.

Recognizing the benefits of having a proven business and operations system and a brand that the consumers could relate to (Often when the brand becomes a success in its overseas markets), Berjaya Group’s massive business empire is an example of how local companies and entrepreneurs can grow their businesses without the need to reinvent the wheel.

If you’re having a hard day, read Woman Entrepreneur Ping Fu’s story. She has had an intense journey from Chinese Exile to Inc Entrepreneur of the Year. She sold her 3D Printing Company, Geomagic, and has now been thrown into new headwinds.

Inc. Woman Entrepreneur of the Year 2005

“Notice that the stiffest tree is most easily cracked, while the bamboo or willow survives by bending with the wind.” – Bruce Lee

BEND DON’T BREAK

China’s Cultural Revolution began when Ping Fu was 8. Her parents were sent for ‘re-education’ and she was left to look after her 4 year old sister. As Ping says “”Father and mother were taken to a local concentration camp. They were screaming my name. Then they disappeared.”

When soldiers threw Ping’s little sister in a pond to drown, she jumped in to save her, and the soldiers punished her by beating and raping her. She was 10.

Ping was forced to work and study in factories for 10 years, missing a school education. When the Cultural Revolution ended, as a university student Ping publicised the Chinese government’s killing of baby girls. She was forced to leave the country for the US with $80.

On arriving in the US at age 25, she was kidnapped for 3 days by a Vietnamese man who she met at the airport, before Police were called, and she was delivered to the University of New Mexico in a police squad car. With little English, she worked as a babysitter and cleaning lady to pay for her university degree in computer science.

As she says, “You get caught in a traffic jam and that’s a bad day? Put it in perspective.” With her memories of how hard things had been, she says “There aren’t many bad days here in comparison.”

In 1991, when Ping was 32, a friend came to her with a problem – How to digitally compute spaces in 3D? Ping remembered a Chinese Proverb “The empty space with a cup is what makes the cup useful.” She worked out the equations to shape the empty space with her husband, and in the process came across the new concept of 3D printing.

She got excited by what 3D printing could achieve in printing personalised products. As she recalls: “We’ll call it the Personal Factory,” “I told Mike Facello, (one of her first employees). “It’s intuitive. People already know the PC. Now we’ll have the PF.” “Cute, Ping,” he observed. “You’ve managed to name an industry after your own initials.”

FOLLOW YOUR DREAMS

The ‘Aha’ moment for her new business came from a dream that day, which went back to her childhood: “I was possessed by the idea of revolutionizing the manufacturing process, just as Henry Ford once had with his invention of the assembly line. That night when I fell asleep, I had a dream about the years I’d spent in factories in China.”

“I awoke the next morning with visions of spinning parts and shining metal floating through my head. I found that I could recall details about those years that I hadn’t been able to for decades. I thought to myself, No wonder I came up with the “personal factory” idea for my business. Working in factories had ingrained not just the knowledge but also the visceral experience of manufacturing into my brain and body.”

A LUXURY YOU CAN’T AFFORD: THE LUXURY OF DOUBT

Her company, Geomagic, launched, and her first printed product was a Pikachu Doll. But times were tough. In 2000, the money they had raised had run out, the tech bubble had burst, and Ping had the choice of closing Geomagic or battling it out. As she says: “All of my instincts kicked in,” she says. “In a crisis mode, you lose all self-doubt – at least I do. I couldn’t afford the luxury of doubt.”

She decided to focus at the dental industry with custom-fit crowns, and signed a $1.8m deal that saved the company. From there, the company and her success gradually took off. In 2005 she became Inc Entrepreneur of the Year. In 2010 Obama selected her to join his National Advisory Council for Entrepreneurship. In early 2013, she sold Geomagic and published her memoirs “Bend not Break”.

The book, which shares her story, is getting heavy criticism from Chinese critics for its portrail of China. She is being called a liar, interested only in self-promotion. How does she counter her ongoing challenges? By recalling her grand father:

“Shanghai Papa told me “There are three friends of winter: the pine tree, the plum blossom, and bamboo: Pine trees are strong. They remain happy and green throughout the year. In the unbearable heat of summer and the severe cold of winter, they stand unperturbed.””

“”The crimson petals of the plum blossom gleam brilliantly against the white snow. The ability to bloom in the midst of misfortune suggests dignity and forbearance under harsh circumstances.” Shanghai Papa then walked over to a grove of bamboo. “This is the third friend of winter. Bamboo is flexible, bending with the wind but never breaking, capable of adapting to any circumstance. It suggests resilience, meaning that we have the ability to bounce back from even the most difficult times.”

Shanghai Papa smiled and continued, “The Taoists understand that there can be no summer without winter, no ups without downs, no growth without decay. Your ability to thrive depends, in the end, on your attitude to your life circumstances. When you are like the three friends of winter, you take everything in stride with grace, putting forth energy when it is needed, yet always staying calm inwardly.”

When you look at the pressures on you today. Will you be the pine, the plum bossom or the bamboo? Will you bend or break? Take a tip from the Woman Entrepreneur – Ping, and remember that, whatever the winter, spring is just around the corner.

Doing Business in Malaysia is neither an easy feat nor a difficult ordeal as it is rich in natural resources, bi-lateral ties with neighboring countries and great business leaders. Malaysia ranks 18th in the upper-income economy from a survey in 2012 and World Economic Forum competitiveness ranking of 21st. Thanks to plenty of business resources that could help ensure that entrepreneurs are on the right track to starting and making it a big business in Malaysia. Is Malaysia gearing on being an industrious challenger or does she depend solely on her natural resources? Let’s look at the businesses in Malaysia that helped her build a reputation as the Asian Tiger once upon a time.

Thriving Business in Malaysia

When we look at the industries that are thriving in Malaysia, no doubt the usual majors are in Banking, Telecommunication, Oil & Gas, Plantation, Construction & Manufacturing shape most parts of the country. Malaysia has also been bullish on ensuring that Tourism plays a part by introducing new funds to boost foreign participation in various industries. With investments made down south in the Peninsular via the Iskandar Development plans, it is crafted to draw good business in Malaysia from its neighbor, Singapore. Iskandar Development is all about Johor enticing Singapore with luxuriously affordable real estate, state of the art facilities and business opportunities. Other direct foreign investments come in forms of manufacturing such as Electric & Electronics, Petrochemicals & Oleo-chemicals, Food & Agro processing and Biotechnology.

So what exactly should one look out for when planning on doing business in Malaysia?

Robert Levitt from Levitt Capital Management LLC, an investment firm, has been investing clients’ bucks in Malaysia and he sees Malaysia as a small populated country that has the ability to be part of the new Asian economic growth engine and is becoming increasingly important to investors.

Malaysian businesses are now beginning to garner new investments elsewhere and certainly Malaysians and foreign companies or entrepreneurs are just waiting to join the bandwagon of business opportunities based on where the facilities and avenues are provided. Most would rely on local & foreign direct investments (FDI) as the compass to do business in Malaysia. In order for Malaysia to be a high-income economy by year 2020, an estimate of RM 1,311 billion of investments – estimates by the Performance Management and Delivery Unit (PEMANDU) – is required and most of it, in the services & manufacturing sector. That’s a whole lot required in a short span of 7 – 8 years. Though Malaysia has been pacing at an average RM 135 billion per year (of which about 60% are from local investments), it will still fall short of the required target, despite ignoring any unforeseen circumstances that might occur. FDI will need to continue to grow to bring that boost required by 2020. So here’s a chart on the split of Malaysia’s investment in 2011 & 2012.

Diving into Malaysia’s 2012 investments, the services streams has strongly overtaken the manufacturing streams at RM 117.6 billion. The Government has thus opened up a number of important services sub-sectors to foreign participation in order to accelerate the growth of the services industry. Allowing foreigners to own businesses in Malaysia or in partnership with locals can help to upgrade the skills of Malaysians and also assist them to establish business links overseas.

The ASEAN commitments have also required Malaysia to progressively open up the domestic services market to participation from other ASEAN countries. The targets and timelines we follow are according to the blueprint mapped out to establish the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015. To date, Malaysia has made liberalization commitments in 96 services sub-sectors between 49-70 per cent ASEAN equity.

And below, a chart on where the money went in sub-sectors, with an obvious huge decline in the E&E and Basic Metal sectors.

Perhaps then it would be clearer to see that doing business in Malaysia within the coming years had swung to the services sector as Malaysia relaxes on foreign participation whilst the manufacturing sector moves to another form of growth such as new technologies.

The largest professional services firm, Price Waterhouse Cooper (PWC) analyses that Malaysia still has weaknesses despite its growth, in that dealing business in Malaysia still deals with the politically connected. Lessons to be learnt or risk losing out to China, Vietnam or Indonesia in the race for foreign investment.

Just maybe, Malaysia might stand a chance to return as the Asian Tiger once again by learning from strategic South Korean economy.

Iconic to entrepreneurs and business owners from across the world, Sir Richard Branson has not only been a successful entrepreneur with inspiring success stories to share. But rather, he has also come a long way through many business ventures which may not have worked out throughout the years. For an entrepreneur who embraces Risk and the ‘Screw it, Just Do It!’ attitude, he is still doing just that!

The Richard Branson Success No.1 – Going Against the Big Boys!

Sir Richard Branson is renowned for his ‘Get the Big Boys’ attitude where he models his ventures towards serving an underserved segment of the market.

He launched Virgin Atlantic in response towards his rather unfavourable experience on British Airways’ flights and he envisioned the possibilities of allowing his customers to be able to afford cheaper fare deals and afford flights better.

The Success of Sir Richard Branson in Creating Virgin Atlantic

Like Virgin Cola (Which was one of his unsuccessful venture), he went up against the giant global brand Coca-Cola in his effort to provide an alternative to the soda drink for consumers.

Even though the marketing onslaught from Coca-Cola managed to break Virgin Cola’s penetration into the mainstream market, entrepreneurs today still admire Sir Richard Branson for his guts to go up against the big boys.

He inspired the belief that everything is possible!

The Richard Branson Success No.2 – Working with the Best Talents and the Best Knowledge

For Sir Richard Branson, his uncanny ability to select the best talents to work with him, armed with the best industrial insights and market knowledge would prove to be his asset in him launching over 300 brands and companies globally.

For a dropout like Sir Richard Branson, he may have realized that knowledge is disposable and be acquired by recruiting the best talents with the right skills and industry insights to work with him.

For an entrepreneur who believes in poaching, retaining and rewarding the best talents that he could find, Sir Richard Branson often sees his employees as people with talents whom he can coach to grow his companies.

He shares his vision with them, aligns their needed skill sets for the job and acts more like a ‘Coach’ or a ‘Business Guru’ who guides them to achieve their business and personal potentials.

It is not hard to imagine why people would love to work for the iconic ‘Virgin’ brand due to the reputation and growth culture that Sir Richard Branson has built.

The Richard Branson Success No.3 – A Thrill for Adventure and Business Ventures Fueled with Passion

It is hard to imagine how one entrepreneur would risk so much to endeavour into ventures which are out of one’s comfort zones or areas of expertise. For Sir Richard Branson, his passion speaks louder than the critics, which is why you would find this British entrepreneur, venturing into high risk businesses and ventures, which have some attributed towards his success.

His mega project of launching Virgin Galactic based on his imaginations and vision for commercial passengers traveling into outer space may be his most daring feat yet, but when asked about his reasoning, the entrepreneur summed it up as a thrill for Adventure and the Excitement of the Possibilities!

As detailed by Forbes.com in this very inspirational piece about Sir Richard Branson’s pursuits, it is not hard to imagine what spurs this entrepreneur on to undertake his daring business ventures.

By the way, Sir Richard Branson is touring Australia this week, so for those entrepreneurs or professionals, here is your chance to meet the entrepreneur himself!

Sir Richard Branson has used these success strategies in the ways how he founded his businesses and turned them into global brands. Each entrepreneur possess the access towards these 3 strategies.

The only question remains, would one dare to undertake such daring ventures to see their dreams realized as an entrepreneur?

Sir Richard Branson certainly did and has accumulated quite a number of success in doing it too!

Recently in Gizmodo, they highlighted an very innovative ad that can show two messages. 1 for adults and 1 for children. This ad is targeted to those kids who are suffering from child abuse and shows a hidden message from the adults.

This is done by the same technology used by some 3D TV and it is called lenticular display which show a different image if viewed from a different angle.

ANAR Foundation manages in Spain the european unique phone number 116 111, to attend children and teenagers under a risk situation. On this telephone number, only for minors, they can find the help they need in a totally anonymous and confidential way. But, how can we get our message to a child abuse victim, even when they are accompanied by their aggressor?

Knowing the average height for adults and children under 10,GREY has created two different messages. Using an outdoor lenticular we show adults an awareness message, while children see a message where we offer them our help and show them the telephone number. A message only for children.
