It seems that 5 Malaysian based startup who participate in GIST bootcamp won a visit to be part of a Younoodle Bootcamp in Silicon Valley. These startups are filtered from the 100 startups selected in last year’s Silicon Valley Comes 2 Malaysia. The overall winner selected by the judges is Piktochart which is based out of Penang.
Piktochart allows you to make beautiful infographics using their web app. The Piktochart team will be given full Scholarship by GIST and StartupMalaysia to attend the one month (July 2012) YouNoodle Bootcamp in Silicon Valley.
The other winners were OctoApp, Voucheres, Secqme and special prize goes to FanXT. These company received a MDEC Sponsored Partial Scholarships to participate in the program. Originally Startup Malaysia promised 10 startups out of the selected 100 to be sent to Silicon Valley for a month but this could be as a result of lack of funding on their side or lack of good startups.

Is this good for startups in Malaysia?
There are argument both sides from multiple parties as this seem like another bootcamp and yet some of these startups get exposure to great mentors and a chance to visit the startup Mecca. Then again, some of these mentors have not done business in Asia and only know the Silicon Valley way. Only time will tell and we will be monitoring the situation.
